Local Missions

On Wednesday, December 9th, volunteers gathered at the church to make bag lunches for the Corner Table, a local soup kitchen servicing the Newton community. The Corner Table offers meals Monday through Thursday between 11:30-12:30 for those who are in need of something to eat. More than 120 bags were made which included a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, crackers, snack cakes, an apple, and a drink. These lunch bags are given out on Thursday to help individuals make it through the weekend while the Corner Table is closed.
The evening started out with people bringing items they felt led to donate. Some volunteered to bring apples, others peanut butter, snack cakes, water, etc. Also came the volunteers who wanted to make the sandwiches and put the lunch bags together. At the beginning was the sandwich crew. Two applied jelly on one slice of bread, while two others smeared creamy peanut butter on the other. It can be a messy job but no one seemed to mind. Then the sandwiches had to be bagged and collected with snack cakes and crackers to be bagged. Another team of two already had bags opened and ready with water and an apple already in it. Finally, the lunch bags were counted and loaded in the car for delivery the next morning. The whole process only took about an hour and a half which is a quick and easy way to help so many in our community.
There are now so many people who are in need. With the current state of our economy and unemployment high, people who in the past were financially secure are having to rely on the services of The Corner Table. As I delivered the lunch bags the next morning I was asked to extend many thanks to the church for all the help it has given. Also, I was told if there are any other dates we would like to help to just let them know.

There were plenty of other opportunities available. Thanks to The Corner Table, since January 2002, a total count of 215, 378 meals have been served. An average of 140 people visit the soup kitchen on a daily basis. If anyone feels led to volunteer at the kitchen or would like to donate other items such as gloves, coats contact the volunteer coordinator at 464-0355, or email The Corner Table at info@thecornertable.org.

FROM KYRGYZSTAN

CHRISTMAS IN KYRGYZSTAN

It is that time of year when we look to support the Global Impact
Resources ministry in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan for the Christmas season. Last year the clothes and other items that were sent were greatly appreciated. This year we looked to a missionary with the GIR team to find out where our Christmas efforts would best be spent. The missionary informed us that 51 children from the orphanage they support had made a visit to the dentist and the estimated bill to clean and fix all the children's teeth would be $1000.00. The church, led up by the council, made the decision that this was a goal that we could accomplish and have pledged money during this tough Christmas season to fill the need. In addition to the money for the children's teeth the children's ministry at UCFC is working on small bags of goodies to send to the children. They will be filling 51 bags with items for the children to have on Christmas. If you would like more information on Global Impact Resources ministry in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan, or if you would like to support their ministry efforts, please contact the church via email, snail mail or phone.

November 2009

Dear Friends,

Today, with a high of 14 & a low of minus 8, winter has quickly come to Kyrgyzstan!  Everyday’s not that cold but some certainly are!  The seasons are changing in the natural & in the spirit.  I feel like the older children’s home & the orphanage are coming into more of their own.  I want you to believe with us that soon will be a season of great harvest where we’ll see much fruit in our labor in this land!

In just a few weeks the size of our older kid’s home has doubled!  When I last wrote you there were 3 older orphans living there & now there’s six—4 girls & 2 boys! Our young people are all college students studying in different faculties from music, tourism, computer programming, cosmetology/seamstress, & welding.  They are all working outside of their regular studies in various places: repairing cell phones, building furniture, dish washer in a local restaurant, at a local ski base, in a food store & in a clothing market.  They’re all busy & it’s a busy home.  It’s very interesting to watch as each of them learning so much about life on their own.  No matter what, our greatest desire is that they will serve God all their days & grow to be people with godly influence.

On another note, I’m happy to tell you that I finally got a Visa!  There were so many obstacles with this but it finally came through.  I’m now legal through the end of January      (I was given 3 months).  Thank you for all your prayers that covered this situation.  When it was all said & done I was told by someone who works in the Foreign Consul’s Department that it was just a plain miracle that I got the Visa & I believe it!

In closing, I would like to ask you to begin to pray for specifically for more self sufficiency of the orphanage & for more local management of the older orphan’s home.  I also desire your prayers in regards to an upcoming trip I would like to make to come home.  There are several details that need to be worked out for these things & I appreciate you taking part by standing with me & the work here through prayer.

As always, I just want to say thanks to you for all the ways you’re a part of what God is doing here.  It’s an honor to work with you to make an impact on the nations!
